Makhno Mikolayovich was born on July 12, 1924 in the village of Luzanivka, Kamyansky district, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine. Following the outbreak of war, he was evacuated to Omsk, and was drafted into the army soon after that. After completing his training in Omsk Military Infantry School, he was sent to the front and took part in the battle of Kursk,where he was wounded in both legs. Later he participated in the Operation Bagration, and saw action Lithuania and East Prussia. He was awarded the Medal for Courage and the Order of Glory for his service.
